Aso Kujū National Park, National park with volcanic peaks in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan
Aso Kujū National Park is a protected area featuring multiple volcanic peaks across Kumamoto and Oita prefectures. The landscape contains interconnected highlands, marshes, and hot springs linked by hiking trails throughout the terrain.
This protected area received official designation in December 1934 and underwent major expansion in 1986. This growth strengthened environmental protections and established its current boundaries.
Pastoral grasslands throughout the park support the raising of Akaushi cattle, whose tender marbled meat is highly valued in Japanese cuisine. These animals are a common sight across the open highlands and shape the character of the landscape.
The area has numerous hiking trails of varying difficulty levels with multiple entry points from towns across the region. Visitors should bring proper hiking shoes and weather protection since conditions can change quickly.
The Tadewara and Bogatsuru marshes contain rare plant species such as shimuraninjin and peat moss. Elevated boardwalks have been installed to protect these sensitive habitats from foot traffic.
