Umoja, Women's settlement in Samburu County, Kenya
Umoja is a settlement in northern Kenya's Samburu region with traditional round houses built from natural materials. The structures are surrounded by acacia trees in the semi-arid landscape and include a primary school, cultural center, and craft market.
Rebecca Lolosoli founded this settlement in 1990 with fifteen women seeking protection from domestic violence. It was Kenya's first women-only community, born from the desire for safety and self-determination.
The residents create traditional beaded necklaces and bracelets that are sold to visitors as their main source of income. This craft work keeps age-old skills alive and forms the foundation of daily life in the settlement.
Visitors can stay in camping facilities and explore the craft market to interact with the artisans directly. The dry season offers the best access, as roads are easier to travel.
Men are not permitted to live in the settlement, and boys must leave when they reach adulthood. This strict rule has been maintained since its founding and continues to define the community's identity.
