West Mebon, Temple ruins in Angkor, Cambodia
The West Mebon temple stands on a square platform measuring 100 meters on each side, featuring three tower-passages adorned with stone lotus flowers.
Built during the 11th century under King Suryavarman I and Udayadityavarman II, West Mebon served as both a religious center and water management structure.
The temple's location within the West Baray reservoir reflects Hindu symbolism, where surrounding waters represent the divine sea of creation.
During dry seasons, visitors can access the temple by land, while rainy seasons transform the structure into an island within the massive reservoir.
In 1936, excavators discovered the largest bronze sculpture in Khmer art at West Mebon: a six-meter-long statue of the Hindu god Vishnu.
