Hwaseong

Hwaseong is a major city in Gyeonggi Province that spreads across the region's largest agricultural area, where melons, herbs, and dairy products are grown. The city is part of the Seoul metropolitan zone and mixes residential neighborhoods with extensive farmland that defines its character.

The city emerged as an independent administrative district in 1949 when Suwon separated from county governance, and it gained city status in 2001. This administrative independence allowed it to develop its own identity focused on regional farm production.

Agricultural traditions shape the daily life here, with specialized farms producing honey melons, herbs, and dairy products that supply much of the region. Visitors can see fields interspersed with residential areas, making farm activity a visible part of the city's character.

Two rail lines, Seoul Subway Line 1 and Suin Bundang Line, connect the city to the greater metropolitan area through several stations including Byeongjeom and Eocheon. The transport links to the capital are well established, making it easy for visitors to arrive from outside the city.

The city manages a complex administrative structure with 26 districts that interweave residential areas with rural zones in an unusual pattern. This mixed approach to urban planning and farming land makes it a distinctive case within the Korean metropolitan region.
