Dongguk University, Private university in Jung District, Seoul, South Korea
Dongguk University is a private institution in Seoul with eleven colleges and ten graduate schools offering 56 departments in total. The main campus sits in Jung District and spreads across several building complexes that include lecture halls, libraries, and student dormitories.
The school was founded in 1906 as Myeongjin School by Buddhist leaders who saw education as a path to national development in Korea. Over the decades, it grew from a small educational center into a nationwide university with multiple locations.
The campus features Buddhist architecture with buildings that echo traditional Korean temples, and students can find meditation rooms to use between classes. Statues and lotus ponds appear throughout the grounds, making the religious foundation of the school visible at many corners.
Visitors can walk freely through the public areas of the campus and view buildings from outside, but should note that many interior spaces are restricted to enrolled students. The campus sits in a central location and is well connected by public transport.
The school runs its own broadcasting system since 1959 for educational content, offering students hands-on experience in media production. Many Korean actors and television hosts took their first steps in front of the camera here.
