Hwaseong Fortress, UNESCO World Heritage fortress in Suwon, South Korea.
The stone and brick defensive walls of Hwaseong Fortress extend for 5.74 kilometers, featuring multiple gates, watchtowers, and military structures along its perimeter.
King Jeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty ordered the construction of this fortress between 1794 and 1796 to protect the remains of his father, Prince Sado.
The fortress design combines Korean architectural elements with advanced military engineering techniques from both Eastern and Western influences of the 18th century.
The fortress complex contains multiple walking paths, information panels in several languages, and regular guided tours available from the main entrance.
The Hwaseong Seongyeok Uigwe, a detailed construction manual with architectural drawings, enabled precise restoration of the fortress after the Korean War.
