Merke Turkic Sanctuaries, Ancient Turkic sanctuaries in Jambyl Region, Kazakhstan
Merke Turkic Sanctuaries is a group of about 170 burial sites scattered across the Kirghizki Alatau mountains at high elevation in the southern part of the country. The sites feature stone structures and stelae built by ancient Turkic peoples to mark and honor their dead.
The site developed over centuries as successive Turkic peoples used these mountains to bury their dead and establish sacred spaces. It received tentative recognition from UNESCO in 1998, acknowledging its importance as evidence of ancient Turkic burial traditions.
Each sanctuary displays one to four stone stelae that mark burial sites, reflecting how Turkic peoples honored their dead and expressed their spiritual beliefs through stone.
The site sits in a mountain region that requires proper preparation due to its remote location and high elevation. Visitors should come equipped for mountain conditions and allow time to explore the scattered sanctuaries across the landscape.
