Urzhar District, Administrative district in Abai Region, Kazakhstan
Urzhar District is an administrative area in eastern Kazakhstan covering roughly 23,400 square kilometers. The region is shaped by the Ürjar river valley and shares a border with China.
The district was founded in 1928 during the Kazakh Autonomous Socialist Soviet Republic period. A significant change came in 1997 when Makanshi District merged with it.
The district maintains strong connections to Kazakh sports traditions, producing Olympic athletes in wrestling, biathlon, and cross-country skiing competitions.
The area experiences sharp temperature swings, with harsh winters and mild summers throughout the year. Visitors should prepare for changeable weather conditions across all seasons.
In January 2024, the eastern portion separated to reform Makanshi District through a presidential decree. This recent split shows how administrative boundaries in the country continue to shift.
