Ritigala, Mountain in Anuradhapura District, Sri Lanka.
Ritigala is a mountain in northern Sri Lanka featuring four distinct peaks connected by a gorge rising to about 572 meters. The area functions as a nature reserve that protects different forest types and plant communities within its boundaries.
The site served as a monastery from the 1st century BCE with structures built for meditation and religious practice. The location was eventually abandoned, though physical remains from this period still stand on the hillside.
The mountain holds spiritual importance in local traditions and appears in Hindu mythological accounts. This sacred connection shapes how visitors and communities relate to the place today.
The mountain is accessible on foot, and visitors should wear sturdy shoes and bring water for the climb. Early morning visits work well since the paths are less crowded and temperatures remain cooler.
The forest reserve here protects a rare remnant of dry evergreen forest that once covered much of the region. This type of plant community has become uncommon in Sri Lanka and exists in only a few protected areas.
