Jabal Arkanu, Mountain and granite rock formation in Kufra District, Libya.
Jabal Arkanu is an oval-shaped mountain of granite in Kufra District, Libya. It rises 500 meters above the Gilf Kebir plateau, reaching an elevation of approximately 1,435 meters.
Arab sources first documented this mountain in 1892. Explorer Ahmed Hassanein conducted the first thorough exploration in 1923.
Ancient rock carvings near this mountain depict various animals like oryx, cattle, and giraffes. These images tell of a time when the region supported a wider range of wildlife.
A valley inside the mountain serves as grazing land where Bedouin herders bring cattle to graze for about three months. The entrance is traditionally marked with stacked rocks.
The mountain displays a spiral structure with concentric rings visible in its formation. Despite receiving less than one millimeter of rain yearly, the valley sustains vegetation.
