Pelagonia Statistical Region, Statistical region in southwestern North Macedonia
The Pelagonia Statistical Region is an administrative division in southwestern North Macedonia, encompassing nine municipalities with Bitola serving as its main city. The area covers plains suitable for farming and hosts several manufacturing facilities, while a growing number of tourism amenities serve visitors.
The area was home to the Pelagones tribe in ancient times, whose name comes from the people inhabiting the plain in the 4th century BC. Through the centuries, the territory experienced various rulers and influences that shaped its development.
The area shows the traces of multiple populations living together for centuries, visible in the local customs and how communities use public spaces in towns and villages. This layering of influences shapes daily life across the region.
The region is well connected by roads, making it possible to explore independently by car or other transport to see its towns, villages, and agricultural areas. The pleasant seasons offer the best conditions for visiting and moving around the territory.
Part of the territory functions as an Important Bird Area where visitors can spot rare species such as Dalmatian pelicans and white storks. This wetland serves as a crucial resting point for migratory birds during their seasonal journeys.
