Lake Khuvsgul

Lake Khövsgöl stretches across northern Mongolia and reaches considerable depths in its basins, framed by mountains on its eastern side. The water maintains exceptional clarity that allows visibility deep below the surface.

The village of Hatgal was established in 1727 as an organized settlement serving military and trade functions. This founding marked the beginning of more structured human presence in the area.

The Tsaatan people practice reindeer herding in the surrounding taiga forests as their primary way of life. This traditional livelihood shapes the character of the region and reflects a deep dependence on the natural landscape.

The lake freezes solid during winter months from November through May, creating thick ice conditions. Visitors planning to travel in this season should prepare for severe cold and bring appropriate winter gear.

This body of water holds a significant share of Mongolia's freshwater reserves while maintaining exceptional underwater visibility. Few visitors realize how much of the country's fresh water supply originates from this single location.
