Kharkhorin

Kharkhorin is an administrative district in Övörkhangai Province that spreads across rolling steppe landscapes with gentle hills. The area sits on a high plateau and is defined by the striking architecture of Erdene Zuu Monastery, which immediately captures visitors' attention.

The district occupies the site of Karakorum, the Mongol Empire's capital during the 13th century under Ögedei Khan. Later, Erdene Zuu Monastery was built using stones from the crumbled palace complex, marking a shift to a new religious era.

The Erdene Zuu Monastery shapes spiritual life in the region, drawing visitors who wish to observe Buddhist practices and rituals. Prayer flags and sacred sites surround the temple grounds, revealing how faith is woven into daily routines.

The best route in is by road from Ulaanbaatar, though part of the journey is unpaved and can become difficult during heavy rains. Visitors should prepare for long travel times and bring plenty of water and supplies, as the region has limited settlements.

Ancient stone turtle statues still stand on the grounds, once marking the boundaries of the imperial city. These enigmatic artworks remind visitors of the region's former power and are easily overlooked unless one searches for them deliberately.
