Monorail, Elevated amusement ride at Efteling theme park in Kaatsheuvel, Netherlands
The Monorail is an elevated ride system in the park's fantasy section that carries snail-shaped vehicles with two passengers each through the Laven village. The track passes over buildings and scenery that bring this imaginary world to life.
The system opened in 1990 when park management decided to add an attraction to this area. It was originally designed to run on human power through pedaling but was converted to use motors instead.
The snail-shaped vehicles represent inhabitants of the Laven realm, a fantasy world with its own rules and life patterns. They carry visitors through a village filled with characters that have their own stories and ways of life.
The ride is easy to access and offers good views of the village from above. Children under 1.20 meters (4 feet) need an adult at least 16 years old to accompany them.
The system was one of the first of its kind where visitors were meant to provide the power for movement through pedaling. This approach was abandoned because motors proved more practical for all age groups.
