Vogel Rok, Indoor roller coaster at Efteling, Netherlands
Vogel Rok is a roller coaster in an enclosed building at Efteling theme park in Loon op Zand, Netherlands. The track runs entirely in darkness and reaches speeds around 40 miles per hour (65 kilometers per hour) with sudden drops and turns.
The ride opened in April 1998 and offered a dark experience from the start. Later changes added light effects and a laser show in the waiting area to expand the experience before boarding.
The name comes from a legendary bird in Middle Eastern tales, and visitors walk beneath an enormous creature with spread wings before boarding. This outdoor entrance sets a storytelling mood that continues once the ride begins inside the building.
Three separate trains run at the same time and reduce waiting time for visitors during the day. Each train has six cars with two rows of seats, so groups and families can often ride together.
Each train carries 96 speakers that play a soundtrack during the ride. This sound adapts to the movements of the track and reinforces the effect of turns and drops in the darkness.
