Gorkha Bridge, Cantilever footbridge in Gorkha District, Nepal
Gorkha Bridge is a cantilever footbridge in Gorkha District that spans 195 meters across the Daroudi River, connecting the communities of Sirdibas and Kerauja. The structure uses steel trusses anchored to cliff faces to create a permanent crossing over the valley.
The bridge was built in 2016 after the 2015 earthquake reshaped the valley's geography and created a critical gap in local connections. Its construction directly addressed the need for reliable passage that the disaster had made urgent.
The bridge sits on an ancient salt trading route that mattered to local merchants and travelers crossing the Manaslu Circuit trail. Locals view this connection as essential to their community, where people meet and interact daily.
The crossing is accessible on foot and open to visitors year-round, with the best conditions during drier months. Local teams regularly inspect the steel structure to ensure safety for everyone who uses it.
The construction used an innovative method where engineers drilled directly into cliff faces to secure the support structure. This was a first-of-its-kind project in Nepal and represented a new solution for crossing difficult terrain.
