Caloocan, Highly urbanized city in Metro Manila, Philippines
Caloocan is a million-resident city in Metro Manila in the Philippines and sits about 30 meters above sea level. The urban area divides into a northern and a southern section, separated by other municipalities of the capital region.
The municipality formed in 1815 through separation from Tondo and developed into an independent territory. Andres Bonifacio launched the Philippine Revolution here in 1896 against Spanish rule.
The name comes from the Tagalog word for inside and marks the location inland of the capital region. Churches and chapels shape the cityscape alongside markets where residents buy daily groceries and household goods.
The city is reached through several main roads and bus lines from other parts of the metro region. Jeepneys and tricycles run through the residential districts and connect the two separate areas with surrounding municipalities.
The administration divides into 193 barangays spread across three legislative districts within the capital region. This structure makes the city one of the most densely subdivided municipalities in Metro Manila.
