Baltistan is a geographic region in the northern part of Gilgit-Baltistan, sitting at roughly 1500 meters elevation. The area covers several valleys such as Skardu, Khaplu and Shigar, and shares borders with India-administered Ladakh and China's Xinjiang.
This territory was part of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir until 1947. The Gilgit Scouts took control at that time and brought the area under Pakistani administration.
The Balti people, an ethnic group of Tibetan descent, maintain distinct musical traditions, architectural styles, and social practices influenced by Tibetan and Mughal elements.
