Mangla Dam

The Mangla Dam extends 3,140 meters across the Jhelum River, reaching a height of 147 meters and forming Mangla Lake with a surface area of 250 square kilometers.

Construction of the dam began in 1961 under the supervision of eight American companies, with British firm Binnie & Partners providing engineering design and expertise.

The construction required relocating 280 villages and 110,000 residents, leading many families from the Dadyal-Mirpur region to establish communities in the United Kingdom.

The dam produces 1,070 megawatts of electricity through ten turbines while managing water resources for agricultural irrigation throughout the surrounding regions.

In 2009, engineers completed a project raising the dam's height by 30 feet to counter sedimentation and increase its water storage capacity to 7.4 million acre-feet.
