Lal Masjid

Lal Masjid is a red brick prayer center in Islamabad's G-6 sector, Pakistan, with attached learning facilities. The compound sits in a residential neighborhood near several government buildings and includes separate areas for religious study and daily gatherings.

The compound opened in 1965 and served as a gathering point for volunteers during the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan. A military operation in 2007 caused extensive damage to the building and drew international attention.

The complex divides learning spaces according to long-established traditions of religious instruction. Students also join communal prayers throughout the day and share meals together within the compound.

Daily prayer times are open to visitors, though certain dress codes and conduct rules apply before entering. The facilities are accessible by public transport along main roads in the G-6 sector.

The name refers to the red color of the outer walls, which give the building its recognizable appearance. Transport and meals for students are provided at no additional cost.
