The library was established in 1951 and merged with Liaquat Memorial Library in Karachi in 1954 to expand its collections. It relocated to Islamabad in 1988, becoming the home of the nation's literary heritage.
The collection holds works in Urdu, English, Arabic, and Persian, documenting the literary diversity of Pakistan. Visitors can discover handwritten manuscripts and rare editions that reflect the country's language traditions.
The facility offers WiFi connections for accessing digital resources and allows visitors to work with the available materials. The spaces are well organized to help with research and support focused study.
Since 1962, the library receives copies of every publication printed in Pakistan, making it a complete record of the nation's printed output. This system ensures that no printed work from the country is lost.
