Pakistan Monument, National monument in Shakarparian Hills, Pakistan.
The Pakistan Monument is a national monument in the Shakarparian Hills near Islamabad, Pakistan. The structure consists of four large granite petals representing major cultures and three smaller ones symbolizing minorities, together forming an opening flower.
President Pervez Musharraf inaugurated the monument in 2007, following a nationwide design competition launched in 2002 to strengthen unity. The project aimed to bring together the country's shared values in a built symbol.
The interior walls show murals featuring places from across Pakistan, including the Khyber Pass and Minar-e-Pakistan. The images also recall the people who worked toward the country's independence.
The complex includes a reference library, an audio-visual archive, a conference hall, and a museum section with wax figures about the founding of Pakistan. A visit combines views of the architecture with insights into the country's history.
From the air, the structure forms a star-and-crescent pattern recalling the national flag. Stainless steel elements contain quotations from Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of the state.
