Islamabad Zoo, Public zoo in Islamabad, Pakistan.
Islamabad Zoo was an animal facility located at the foot of Margalla Hills with enclosures for both local and foreign species. The grounds also included a Japanese garden section spread across a large area for visitors to explore.
The facility opened in 1978 and operated for over four decades as a well-known destination in Islamabad. Operations ceased in 2020 after concerns arose regarding the welfare of the animals housed there.
The zoo served as a place where families from Islamabad could learn about local wildlife and exotic animals from around the world. Visitors spent time walking through different animal areas and relaxing in the Japanese garden section.
The grounds were spread out and required leisurely walking to see all sections. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and allow time to stroll through different areas comfortably.
An Asian elephant named Kaavan spent decades at the facility and eventually drew international attention to his situation. His story ultimately led to his relocation to a sanctuary outside the country.
