Attock, Administrative center in Punjab, Pakistan.
Attock is a city in the northwestern part of Punjab province located on the eastern bank of the Indus River. It serves as the headquarters of Attock District and connects the southern Punjab plains with the northwestern highlands.
The area saw military campaigns when Alexander the Great, Mahmud of Ghazni, and Babur crossed the Indus during their conquests. The town later developed as a strategic junction between eastern and western regions.
The population of Attock District communicates in multiple languages, with Punjabi spoken by 65 percent, Pashto by 15 percent, and Hindko by 14 percent.
The city lies between Islamabad and Peshawar and is accessible via road connections linking both metropolitan areas. Visitors will find lodging options and restaurants in the area catering to travelers passing through the region.
The Indus narrows here to one of its tightest points along its entire course, which has facilitated river crossings for centuries. A hydroelectric project near the town uses a diversion channel spanning several kilometers to generate power.
