Model Colony, Urban residential neighborhood in Korangi District, Karachi, Pakistan
Model Colony is a residential neighborhood on Karachi's eastern side, stretching northeast of Jinnah International Airport, with homes and local shopping areas. The area includes schools, health clinics, and a sewerage network that reaches most houses.
The neighborhood began through Fatima Jinnah's vision, sister of Pakistan's founder, who had planner Makki design a residential area for Muhajir settlers. This development was part of building Karachi in the years following Pakistan's independence.
Residents with roots in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar shape daily life through local markets and community gatherings that reflect their traditions. These activities define how people interact and spend time together in the neighborhood.
The area connects well to downtown Karachi through regular public transport, making it easy to reach from the city center. Roads can be uneven in parts, and local markets are best visited in the early morning hours.
The neighborhood is home to Pakistan's Security Press, the national mint facility that produces currency and important documents. It also houses an SOS Village that provides daily care for about two hundred orphaned children living there.
