Markowe Szczawiny, Mountain village in Gmina Zawoja, Poland.
Markowe Szczawiny is a mountain village in Gmina Zawoja situated at around 1180 meters elevation on the northern slopes of Babia Góra. The area sits within Babia Góra National Park and is crossed by several hiking routes that connect different sections of the protected landscape.
A first shelter building in this area was constructed in 1906 by the Tatra Society to provide mountain travelers with lodging. The current structure replaced the original building in 2010, offering visitors updated facilities.
The village name comes from Alpine sorrel plants that thrive in former shepherd areas due to nutrient-rich soil. This vegetation still shapes the landscape character around the settlement today.
The location is easily reached on foot and serves as a junction for hikers of various abilities. Routes are well marked, and the area can be visited year-round, though summer months offer the best visibility and stable conditions.
A weather monitoring device was installed in 2021 next to an information center that continuously tracks temperature, humidity, and air pressure. The readings are made available online for visitors and researchers, turning the place into a weather observation point for the mountain region.
