Ilhéu de Vila Franca, Volcanic islet near Vila Franca do Campo, Azores.
Ilhéu de Vila Franca is a small volcanic islet near Vila Franca do Campo featuring a circular natural pool at its center. This basin, roughly 150 meters across, connects to the open ocean through a northern opening called Boquete.
The islet emerged from a submerged volcanic cone approximately 4,000 years ago and has been continuously reshaped by ocean waves and earthquakes. These natural forces over millennia created the landscape you see today.
The islet has been a protected Nature Reserve since 1983, serving as a home for plants and seabirds found nowhere else in the world. Walking here, you can see how carefully the site is managed to keep these species thriving.
Visits are easiest from June through September when regular boat service runs from Vila Franca do Campo marina to the islet. Daily visitor numbers are capped at around 400 people to help protect the site.
The rocky cliffs are made of basalt and palagonite tuff, with vertical columns reaching up to 62 meters above sea level. These distinctive stone formations are a result of how ancient lava cooled and fractured, making them geologically unusual.
