Al Naslaa, Rock formation with petroglyphs in Tayma, Saudi Arabia

Al Naslaa is a rock formation made of two sandstone blocks separated by a straight vertical gap, with each block resting on a natural pedestal that rises from the desert floor near Tayma. Both halves display incised depictions of animals and humans carved into the surface over many centuries.

The rock formation developed long ago through geological processes, while the carvings likely date from different periods and provide clues about early cultures in the region. Tayma was a hub for trade routes over centuries, and the engravings may have been created by travelers or settlers.

The name Al Naslaa may derive from a local term or geological feature, and visitors today come mainly to see the carvings etched into the stone. The incised figures show animals and human shapes that help visualize life in this region thousands of years ago.

Visitors reach the formation via unpaved desert tracks and should use an off-road vehicle or organized tour, as public transport does not extend to this area. Water, sun protection, and sturdy footwear are necessary because there are no facilities on site.

The dividing line between the two halves runs so straight and clean that visitors often wonder whether it could have formed naturally or was shaped by human hands. Scientists continue to discuss the exact causes, with natural fractures and erosion being the most likely explanations.
