Qal'at Najm

The stone castle stands on an elevated position along the Euphrates River, featuring defensive walls, towers, and a central courtyard with a fountain.

The initial fortifications date back to the 7th century, with major reconstruction work carried out by Nur ad-Din starting in 1168.

The castle includes a mosque with a rare architectural double arcade that overlooks the Euphrates River, reflecting Islamic architectural traditions.

Visitors can reach the castle via an artificial causeway that connects the structure to the mainland since its transformation into an island.

The castle served as a Turkish exclave between 1921 and 1973, maintaining separate administration and military presence during that period.
