Mediterranean Region, Administrative region on the southern coast of Turkey.
The Mediterranean Region is an administrative area along the southern coast of Turkey that stretches from the Aegean edge to the southeastern mountains. It includes flat coastal strips, rolling hills, and steep mountain ranges running parallel to the sea.
Greek settlers founded numerous colonies along this coast, which later grew into trading centers under Roman rule. After Rome fell, Byzantine and Ottoman empires conquered the territory and shaped it for centuries.
Coastal communities rely heavily on fishing and prepare daily meals around fresh fish, vegetables, and olive oil. Villages in the inland hills follow different patterns and often hold on to traditions like weaving and farming.
Coastal towns remain accessible year-round, while higher mountain roads often become difficult to navigate in winter. Travelers should check local weather reports before heading inland.
The cooler plateaus above the shore offer completely different vegetation from the hot beaches just a few kilometers away. These elevation changes create several climatic zones side by side in a small area.
