Alanya Castle, Medieval castle on Mediterranean peninsula, Turkey
The castle spans 30 hectares across a rocky promontory, featuring 6.5 kilometers of defensive walls with 140 towers surrounding the fortified complex.
Sultan Kayqubad I established this stronghold in 1221 during the Seljuk period, incorporating earlier Roman and Byzantine fortification elements into the structure.
The fortress stands as an example of Seljuk military architecture, displaying detailed stonework techniques and engineering methods from the 13th century.
Visitors can reach the castle through a paved road or take the cable car from the city entrance to access the archaeological grounds.
The castle contains an advanced water management system with 400 cisterns designed to sustain its inhabitants during extended periods.
