Pazarcık, district and town of Kahramanmaraş, Turkey
Pazarcık is a small town in Kahramanmaraş Province in Turkey with a long history of human settlement. The area features narrow streets, old stone houses, and archaeological sites dating from different periods of the past.
Pazarcık was an ancient border area between the Hittites and Assyrians, as shown by old boundary stones in the region. Over centuries it came under control of Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks, and Ottomans, each leaving their mark on the land.
Pazarcık has been called by different names throughout history, such as Gurgum and Katamana, reflecting the various peoples who lived here. Today visitors can experience local traditions, festivals, and crafts that residents continue to practice and pass down through generations.
The town is best explored on foot through its narrow streets typical of older Turkish settlements. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes since the uneven pathways and archaeological sites have irregular surfaces.
Artifacts over 3000 years old have been found in the region, including bone and stone tools as well as pottery showing how long people have lived here. Roman coins and remains of roads also suggest the settlement was an active place even in ancient times.
