Arslantepe Mound, Archaeological excavation site in Malatya, Turkey.
Arslantepe Mound is a 30-meter-high hill containing the layered remains of successive settlements built by different cultures over thousands of years. Within its layers lie residential structures, palace complexes, burial grounds, and thousands of objects made from clay, metal, and stone.
Settlement began around 4500 BCE, and the site grew into a ruler's seat during the Late Chalcolithic period. This role brought fortified defenses and a structured administrative system.
This place served as an important administrative hub where people engaged in trade with distant regions. The artifacts found here reveal how different ancient societies maintained connections with one another.
The site has marked pathways, information panels, and professional guides available for visitors. Wear comfortable shoes as you will walk on uneven ground, and bring sun protection as the area is exposed and often hot.
The earliest known metal swords in human history were discovered here, revealing sophisticated metalworking skills. These weapons suggest that the people living here had a highly organized military structure.
