Middle East Technical University, Research university in Çankaya, Turkey
Middle East Technical University is a public research institution in Çankaya, a district of Ankara in Turkey, that spans roughly 11,000 acres (4,500 hectares). The grounds include large woodland areas and the natural Lake Eymir, surrounded by walking paths and low concrete and glass university buildings.
The institution was founded in 1956 and relocated to Turkey's first purpose-built university campus in 1963. It began operations in temporary buildings before permanent structures were completed, and it grew into a center for technical and scientific education.
The campus carries the official nickname Orman Kampüsü, meaning Forest Campus, which reflects its woodland setting. Students and faculty use the grounds for walks and often meet by the shores of the lake, where small groups gather to study or rest.
Access to the campus is free, but visitors should note that lectures and labs are conducted in English. Those exploring the grounds can use the paved paths around the lake, which remain walkable throughout the year.
The university operates Teknokent, Turkey's first science park, which connects laboratories directly with private companies. This park allows students to work on projects that link theoretical knowledge with practical application in industry.
