Lake Mogan, lake in Gölbaşı, Ankara, Turkey
Lake Mogan is a large body of water in Gölbaşı district, surrounded by fields and trees, with calm, clear water covering approximately 15,000 hectares. The lake is framed by hills on three sides, while the southern side is flat and contains wetlands like Çökek Bataklığı that support various plant and animal habitats.
The lake formed from a natural valley that was originally a stream bed, gradually developing into a body of water as materials carried by streams accumulated over time. In the late 20th century, the area gained protection due to its importance for rare plants and birds, eventually being recognized as an Important Bird Area.
The lake is a place where locals and visitors spend time enjoying outdoor activities like bird watching, picnicking, and nature exploration. Annual events celebrate the connection between people and nature, and many visitors photograph native plants and animals to share their experiences.
The lake is easy to reach from Gölbaşı town and offers walking paths along the shore for visitors wanting to stroll or observe birds. It is best to arrive in early morning or late afternoon when the light is soft, and bring your own food and water since shops are not available at the site.
A rare plant called Centaurea tchichatcheffi grows only in this area and nearby pine forests, making the lake a particularly valuable natural site. The lake also hosts a small colony of roughly 200 to 300 little kestrels and is home to rare duck species like the white-headed duck, which have become scarce elsewhere.
