Eurasia Tunnel, Undersea road tunnel in Istanbul, Turkey.
The Eurasia Tunnel is an undersea road connection beneath the Bosphorus, linking Kazlicesme on the European side with Goztepe on the Asian side. The two-deck tube runs deep below the seabed and allows continuous traffic flow between both shores of the city.
A French engineer proposed an underwater crossing through the Bosphorus in the late 19th century. Construction began more than a century later and the passage opened to traffic in the mid-2010s.
The name spans the arc from Europe to Asia and shows in daily use by commuters who switch between continents each morning and evening. Drivers experience a brief moment beneath the sea as the familiar cityscape disappears and reappears on the other side.
The drive through the tube takes a few minutes and shortens the journey between the two parts of the city considerably. Vehicles can pass through without interruption while emergency exits are distributed along the route.
The deepest point lies more than 100 meters below sea level and the construction withstands seismic shocks. Small safety zones appear every 200 meters along the walls, offering drivers refuge in case of emergency.
