Saint James is a district in Port of Spain that develops along Western Main Road and reaches toward Long Circular Road and the Maraval River. Houses and small shops line the main road, while side streets branch into quieter residential areas.
The area began as a sugar plantation called Peru Estate, where Indian indentured workers lived and worked during the 19th century. Port of Spain formally incorporated the settlement in 1938.
Streets like Agra, Bombay and Delhi show the influence of the Indian community that has lived here for more than a century. Roti shops and street food stalls sell dishes that residents and visitors eat daily.
Local buses connect the district to downtown Port of Spain, and most routes within the area can be walked. The Saint James Public Library offers information and restrooms for visitors.
Writer V.S. Naipaul, who received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2001, was born here. Musician Nicki Minaj was also born in this district before her family moved to the United States.
