Kaohsiung Metro, Rapid transit system in Kaohsiung, Taiwan
Kaohsiung Metro is a rapid transit network in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, made up of two main lines that cross the city from north to south and east to west. Trains run in air-conditioned cars on elevated and underground sections, with the lines intersecting at two central stations.
Planning studies for the network began in the late 1980s, while construction started in 2001. Operations opened in 2008, and a light rail line was added several years later.
Formosa Boulevard Station displays the Dome of Light, a glass artwork made from over 4500 individual panels created by Italian artist Narcissus Quagliata. Many stations carry names that recall the city's history and its geographic setting.
Riders can purchase rechargeable cards at machines or service counters inside stations, which can also be used on buses and at some shops. Trains typically run every five to ten minutes during the day and less often late in the evening.
The red line runs partly on a former railway corridor once used for freight transport. Some stations offer access to bicycle rental systems directly on the platforms.
