Caoya, Kaohsiung, Maritime district in Siaogang, Taiwan
Caoya is a coastal district in Kaohsiung with residential areas and harbor facilities that support fishing boats and maritime operations. The area blends apartment buildings with active docks and fish market infrastructure that processes daily catches.
The area was established as an administrative center during the Ming dynasty when Zheng Chenggong set up governance structures on Taiwan. The name Caoya comes from government buildings that were part of this early settlement.
The fishing harbor remains a working place where you can watch boats come in with their daily catch and see vendors selling fresh seafood to local buyers.
The district is best explored on foot, with harbor areas most active in the morning when boats arrive. The area has narrow streets between residential buildings and the water, so allow time for walking around.
Many visitors don't realize this is a self-contained fishing community with traditions passed down through generations, rather than just an extension of the city. This connection to the sea shapes daily life more than proximity to the metropolis.
