Kaohsiung main station, Railway transport hub in Sanmin District, Taiwan.
Kaohsiung main station is an underground transport hub in Sanmin District, Taiwan, serving regional trains and urban transit lines. The complex extends across three levels below ground and features two island platforms for passenger services.
The first station appeared here in 1900 and carried the port city's original name. Between 1933 and 1941, the building underwent complete renewal and received its largest form until that time.
The name Takau comes from the language of the region's first inhabitants and refers to a place near water. Travelers today move between different transport levels connected by wide staircases and escalators throughout the day.
Ticket machines accept coins only, while service counters can exchange banknotes and provide route information. The complex is under reconstruction work, so temporary exits and detours are marked with signage on site.
Reconstruction continues until 2024 and aims to improve connections between the two transport systems without halting daily operations. Visitors during the work can observe how modern technology fits into the older underground space.
