天雲谷瀑布, Natural waterfall in Alishan Township, Taiwan
The Tianyungu Waterfall drops through five sections that form a total height of 220 meters, with the largest single plunge measuring 90 meters. Water cascades over steep rock faces and creates multiple visible steps along the mountainside.
The hiking trails around the waterfall began as essential pathways connecting different mountain settlements for trade and daily life. These routes allowed residents to move between isolated communities and maintain their connection to the wider region.
Local people joke about the hiking routes by calling them 'blood donation trails' because of the dense mosquito populations that fill the summer forest. This nickname reflects the real challenges visitors face when exploring the area.
The complete hiking trail measures around 1.7 kilometers and takes roughly 1.5 hours to reach the viewing platform from the starting point. Bring plenty of water and wear proper hiking shoes, as the path becomes steep and slippery in places.
The waterfall's source, Yaorenmao Stream, varies dramatically in water volume depending on the season and rainfall. Heavy rains bring a powerful cascade, while dry periods create a gentler appearance that reveals different aspects of the rock formations.
