The hotel first opened in 1957 at a different location in Kaohsiung before moving to its current site beside Cheng Ching Lake in 1971. The new building was designed in the classical Chinese palace style, which gave the property the look it still has today.
The hotel is modeled after the famous Grand Hotel in Taipei and shares its style of curved roofs, red columns, and decorative details drawn from classical Chinese palace architecture. Walking through the entrance area, visitors can see this style up close in the carved wooden panels and painted ceiling details.
The hotel sits in Niaosong beside Cheng Ching Lake and is most easily reached by taxi or private car. Once there, the lakeshore is within walking distance, so it is worth setting aside time to walk along the water before or after checking in.
The Kaohsiung Grand Hotel belongs to the same hotel group as the Grand Hotel Taipei, one of the most recognized buildings in Taiwan, and was founded as part of the same government-backed initiative to create flagship hospitality landmarks.
