Delta County encompasses 1,149 square miles of land between the Grand Mesa, West Elk Mountains, and Uncompahgre Plateau in western Colorado.
The Colorado legislature established Delta County on February 11, 1883, naming it after the fertile delta where the Uncompahgre River joins the Gunnison River.
The county maintains numerous orchards and wineries throughout its territory, producing agricultural goods that reflect the local farming traditions.
The Delta County Joint School District 50-J operates multiple educational facilities across the region, serving students from elementary through high school levels.
The territory contains sections of five national protected areas, including the Dominguez Canyon Wilderness and portions of the Grand Mesa National Forest.
