Charles City County extends between Richmond and Jamestown, with the James River marking its southern border and the Chickahominy River defining its eastern edge.
The Virginia Company established Charles Cittie in 1619 as one of the first four boroughs, naming it after Prince Charles before becoming a royal colony in 1624.
The Chickahominy, Paspahegh, and Weanoc tribes maintained settlements along the rivers before English colonization, contributing to the region's early cultural development.
