Blue Mountains, Mountain range in northeastern Oregon and southeastern Washington, United States.

The Blue Mountains form a mountain range spanning northeastern Oregon and southeastern Washington, featuring a mix of high peaks and river valleys throughout the landscape. The terrain varies considerably across the range, with different elevations and geological features creating diverse habitats and terrain types.

Native American tribes including the Cayuse and Nez Percé inhabited the Blue Mountains for generations before European settlers arrived in the 1800s. European presence gradually transformed the region through settlement patterns and changes in land use.

The range takes its name from the blue haze created by smoke from Indigenous agricultural fires that hung over the mountains for centuries. This atmospheric effect shaped how people understood and referred to this landscape.

Interstate 84 passes through the mountains and provides the main access route through the region. Plan visits according to seasonal conditions, as higher elevations can become difficult to reach during winter months.

The region contains an enormous fungal organism that spreads underground through vast networks of fibers beneath the forest floor. This living colony represents one of the largest organisms found anywhere on Earth.
