Great Molasses Flood, Disaster in Boston
The Great Molasses Flood, also known as the Boston Molasses Disaster, was a disaster that took place on January 15, 1919, in the North End neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts.
A large molasses storage tank burst and a wave of molasses sped through the streets at an estimated 35 mph, killing 21 people and injuring 150.
This unique historical event prompted several changes to laws in United States regarding industrial safety regulations.
A remnant from this disaster can still be found today in some of the harbor area's paving stones that are said to occasionally exude a faint smell of molasses on hot summer days.
It is considered one of the most unusual industrial accidents in history.
