The community was originally known as Penobscot before becoming Mountain Top due to its position on elevated terrain. The area grew slowly over time as people moved here to enjoy the quiet surroundings and natural landscape.
The community is accessible via Pennsylvania Route 309 and sits about 5 miles from Wilkes-Barre. The area offers wide open spaces suitable for walking, biking, and enjoying the surrounding hills and streams.
The area sits at an elevation of about 1,550 feet with scenic views from certain spots across the surrounding landscape. A ridge called Nescopeck Mountain runs along the southeast edge and shapes the region's character.
