Baldwin Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area, Protected wildlife area in Randolph County, Illinois
Baldwin Lake is a freshwater reservoir in Randolph County managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. The water body spans roughly 2,000 acres and was originally designed as a cooling facility for a power plant.
The lake was created in the 1970s when the Illinois Power Company built a reservoir to cool its power plant. Later, the site was transferred to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and converted into a wildlife protection area.
The area serves as a winter refuge where migrating birds stop to rest and feed throughout the cold months. The open water surfaces provide geese and ducks with essential habitat as they travel seasonally.
The lake has two boat ramps with parking areas for vessels under 50 horsepower, and the shoreline is fairly accessible. Visitors can fish throughout the year and should check local conditions during bad weather.
The power plant discharges warm water into the lake, raising winter temperatures by about 15 degrees Celsius. This artificial heat source promotes algae growth and creates food for large flocks of birds.
