The municipality was named after General Antonio Domingo Sifontes, who established a military position in the area during 1894. This founding was part of efforts to secure the border region against external threats.
Indigenous communities in the region contributed the name Tumeremo, meaning Painted Snake, which became the designation for the municipal capital.
