Villa Planchart

Villa Planchart is a modernist residence in Caracas built into a hillside with terraced levels and clean geometric forms. The house opens widely to the outdoors through large windows and doors, dissolving the boundary between interior rooms and the surrounding landscape.

The Italian architect Gio Ponti designed this house and completed it in 1957 for a Venezuelan industrialist and his wife. The project emerged during a period when modernist design was reshaping residential architecture across the Americas.

The residence reflects a meeting between Italian design expertise and Venezuelan craftsmanship, with locally sourced materials and details that honor regional artistic traditions. Walking through the spaces, you notice how European modernism blends with South American sensibilities in the furnishings and décor.

The site is open to visitors through guided tours conducted in small groups to protect the structure and its contents. Comfortable shoes are recommended because the house sits on a slope with multiple levels connected by stairs.

The house contains an extensive collection of custom-designed furniture that Ponti created specifically for each room, and much of it remains in its original placement. These tailored pieces are so integrated into the spaces that they feel inseparable from the architecture itself.
